Approving spammish comments 4 engagement?

This is actually a good question and something I've wondered about myself. Negative and useless comments I tend to delete, but it really depends on the context.

My personal way of judging it is: Did that make me laugh, and is that super offensive.

If it's super offensive to anyone in particular, I'll just delete it plain and simple, but if it's not, and it made me laugh, then even if it's a dig at me or completely unrelated to the video I'll leave it in.

As long as the comment has no link (I don't want any links to a virus or bad s**t on my videos) then whatever you wanna write just boosts my engagement!

I followed this rule when I first started. But once I started getting more traffic, I became more strict, deleting harsh comments that add no value and I also allowed people to post links if it was relevant. For example: I don't mind people posting links to their blogs if they featured me in it.

Ok then. I get people wanting me to sub for a chance to win in their shoutout videos to get more subs. Lol! I will approve these then! Thanks!

I approve s4s and sub hunters and sub loops as long as it doesn't have links off the site (as that will signal that my video killed the session). If there is a link to their video, I will look at views and quality. Generally a s4s video will be low quality (but not always), This may also kill the overall session time. So almost always I delete it.

One guy sent his channel link and I was like fine. Then he did it on every video. I was like ok I get it!

Delete the spam. If the comment is already posted then the interaction is already counted.
And definitely don't let people link off-site. As @KiddieToysReview said, that indicates to YouTube that your video ended their watch session. Almost never worth it.

From my personal experience, the comment section can feed off itself. If one person posts a joke, 10 more people will copy and post the same joke. Negativity breeds negativity; positivity breeds positivity. So keeping your section clean and free of spam sets an important precedent that your videos are places for discussion and not for garbage.
