anyone know where I can get a good desktop?

I think i'll buy one that's alright then just upgrade from there
A screen is at least 90 dollars, a cheap cheap keyboard 5 dollars, a cheap mouse another 5 dollars, Windows 7 is about 100 dollars, that's already 200 bucks spent without even starting the PC!
Here's a build I made, it's really really bad, costs 450 dollars and includes everything you need.
If you had a screen/mouse/keyboard already as well as maybe an OS, 400 bucks for a computer on its own is a lot more doable.

I have a mouse and a monitor already but the monitor is more of a tv but I could do with it until christmas since I normally get money as gifts sent from family :)

for now I was looking at custom built ones and it seems i'm finding that it's more expensive custom built, the price just racks up for a decent processor, ram and graphics cards, those are my main concerns but it's just impossible

Yep pretty much. And don't get someone to custom build a PC for you, buy all the parts yourself. It's easy as pie!

Depends on many things. but generally you want a lot of RAM, a good multi thread CPU and for some things a good GPU.
does this seem pretty decent enough? I'm gonna hunt down the parts later-
