Anyone have this microphone?

I've recently gone through my old stuff and found a fully working (in it's box) mic that I think I'm going to use from now on, it's a Skytronic Condenser Microphone 173.628

Does anyone or has anyone had one?

Do I need to be almost on top of it to record? Because I tried it out earlier from a little distance and it barely picked me up, but when I put it right up to my mouth it picked me up fairly well.

Try different angles, depends how well the room is placed and what is placed around it for your voice to travel.
 
Condenser microphones nearly always benefit the most from about a handwidth distance from your mouth at a 45 degree off center angle.

Some are designed to allow for more distance or omnidirectional recording for things like interviews and such. You may also need to just pump the amplification in post editing though be warned this will introduce significant noise.
 
I tried a blue snowball and didn't like it to much, sounded too quiet, and as stated above if I raised the volume too much I got a lot of noise - although I'm no sound expert here!

I now use a powered lapel mic (the type you clip onto yourself). To be exact its a Audio Technica ATR-3350.
I first used this with my iPhone to get better sound quality (along with an iPhone adapter), and now use it plugged into my DSLR - in both cases the audio is crisp and clear.
Very happy with it.
 
Snowball is another that benefits greatly from that handwidth distance (4-8 inches) from the cheek.

I still found it too quiet even at a slight distance - maybe it was just my settings or something though as its rated pretty highly!!

A lot bigger then I expected though!
