Any suggestions?

Yachts For Sale

Yachts For Sale
The videos I produce are divided into two categories;
  • Documentary style videos of yachts that are for sale.
  • Vlogs about yachts that are for sale and yachting related matters.

I am pretty happy with the quality of the documentary videos, but I use a production company for these and they are quite expensive. The vlog videos could be a lot better though. I usually film them from behind my desk and add images, but they just seem dreary in comparison with other vlogger's videos, mainly due to the setting.

The subject matter of my vlogs is a serious one (fun...but serious), so I need to have a relevant environment to film in. I can occasionally film on a yacht (which is perfect of course) but I can't always guarantee that so I need a regular setting for most of the videos.

I have been looking for inspiration and here are a few settings that I like:
  • Tim Schmoyer of Video Creators - a plain grey background, head and shoulders shot, good lighting.
  • Marie Forleo - sitting on a stool in a beautiful room. Amazing lighting and composition, looks professionally shot.
  • The Young Turks - not really a vlog as such - classic news room setting.
Do any of you have suggestions of vloggers who use a great setting for their vlogs? I'd really like to take a look at some different examples that could be used for a business based vlog.

I'm currently suffering from what is known as "the paralysis of analysis"... I have been analysing it for so long I've ended up not doing anything at all!

I rather enjoyed your most recent vlog where you were seated in the desk. I think the environment along with your editing and mannerisms are very suitable for the type of videos you're creating. I checked out the three channels you mentioned and out of the three I think Tim's setup is the easiest/cleanest look to have at the ready for something like a vlog.

I enjoy watching Film Riot which has an identical setup to Tim's. They both use a green screen, but Film Riot has a generated office background that they add a slight blur to. I saw in one of your videos you had used a green screen and had a few boats in the background. It'd be similar to that, but you'd want more of a sleek setting and then blur that a bit.

Like I said though, I thought the desk setting worked pretty nicely as well. Hope that helped at least a little bit.

Thanks, it helped more than a little bit! I took a good look at Film Riot's channel. They have almost arrived at 100,000,000 views now, so you can't argue with success!
The more I look at other successful vlog channels the more I'm coming to the conclusion that I probably just need to invest in better video and sound equipment and to put a little more time into the writing and execution of the videos I produce.
The early green screen video blogs that you saw were my very first attempts, I used a video production company in France to film them. They were outrageously expensive and a bit of a waste of money to be honest, but they did set me off on the idea of a youtube channel.
Anyway, thanks again for your comments!
