Any ideas why this happens?

I've got a pretty good grip on what it takes to have a successful channel and am reasonably happy with the results with mine...but sometimes something happens I just don't understand.

95% of my content is unique and created by me, but every so often I will post somebody else's video if they ask me to. I posted a beautiful video of a 165' yacht at the request of the yacht builder, used good tags and a good description. In just over one year it has received just over 3000 views, which to be honest is quite disappointing considering that some of my self-generated content has received 50,000 - 100,000 views.

What is really confusing though is that one of my competitors with a slightly smaller channel and posting mostly other people's videos have published the same 165' yacht video at around the same time as me and have received almost 260,000 views!

Does anybody have any idea why this may be the case? They have a slightly different description to me (which ironically contains incorrect information about the yacht), but I find it difficult to believe that this would result in such a massive difference in views. Almost 70% of their channel's total views are due to this one video!

Your wisdom and insight would be most appreciated,
 
welcome to the internet, where people lie on youtube to gain views and money. its possible that the same owner of the 165' yacht video requested for that channel and many more channels as well.
 
Hi Technomania, thanks for your comment. To be honest, the yacht builder that is building the yacht is probably quite happy for multiple brokers to post the video. At the end of the day they don't really care who promotes and sells the yacht...as long as somebody sells it.

I was just surprised that a channel that is slightly smaller than mine and that has far less unique content should get such an amazing result when they post the same video as me at around the same time.

The most likely use better tags and description as well as social media promotion. Try using some of those to improve your SEO.
 
Hi Ninja - thanks. The social media promotion could well be the key. I'm a little weak on that side and I guess it just takes a few shares for the numbers to go off the charts.
 
Do both - your and "rival's" video appear when you search it with certain key words on youtube? maybe his comes on top? In which case this would be a reason why he gets more clicks, maybe his thumbnail is more eye catching too?
People do not check the channel before watching video with stuff they were looking for therefore this plays little into view counts he gets i believe.
 
Hi Gamersname - this particular video has always been a mystery to me. From the day I uploaded, it never appeared on a search, at least certainly not on page 1.

To give you some idea of how strange this is, my videos are not about subjects like gaming or (heaven forbid) make-up tutorials...they are all about highly specialised topics so there is not a huge amount of competition out there. The yacht in question is called a WIDER 165'. If you search the WIDER 150' (a smaller version of the same) my videos are very easy to find and receive tens of thousands of views. With the WIDER 165' I applied all the same practices of tag words, description, sharing to social media...but it flopped. Even to this day it is difficult to find that particular video as posted by me by searching for "WIDER 165'".

I think that Ninja was on to something when he mentioned social media. If I understand correctly youtube ranks videos according to their views and minutes viewed in the first 7 - 10 days of the video being posted. If my competitor had a good response on his social media in that early time frame and I did not maybe that gave him a kick-start that I have not been able to catch up.
 
I've checked 10 search pages with keywords "wider 165" and yours wasn't even there :/ then i've checked tags that were used for No. 1 on search list and your video:
No 1. "wider yachts, wider 165, Luxury Yacht (Ship Type), Yacht (Ship Type), superyacht, super yacht, yatch, yatchs, yates, boot, megayachts, pershing, large persh..."
Yours: "WIDER, WIDER Yacht, WIDER super yacht, WIDER 165, WIDER 165 super yacht, WIDER 165 yacht, WIDER for sale, WIDER yacht for sale, yacht for sale, super yacht ..."
You can make conclusion from it. My suggestion is to always make first tag your actual video name, then work from it further. By the way i couldn't find your video even when i typed wider 165 superyacht too. So maybe including this main ""wider 165 superyacht (or super yacht)" tag in front will make it up and after youtube refreshes search algorithm output it will pop up for people on searches.

Also, have you checked from were those 3k+ views came mainly for your video?

Thanks for taking the time to do this GamersName - I didn't even know it was possible to see what other tags people are using. I'll change/add tags straight away and let you know in time if I see any appreciable results.

For the WIDER 150' I get great results, but WIDER are a new and growing yacht builder so I expect there to be many more searches in the future for the 165' - especially early next year once the 150' has been launched and focusses shifts to the larger 165'. I want to grab a chunk of that audience!
 
There is one channel "perfect" that puts similar videos about yachts and its video for "wider 165 superyacht" pops up 4th from top, though he has little views ~70 only, this too might be a reason why yours not visible since both of you share same names for videos, so maybe try to add little something to yours like for instance "wider 165 superyacht - luxury yacht", after changes were applied, in month or 2 you should see results if there will be any, i do wish you all the best, you do seem to be honest and hard working person :)
