An awesome free option is to use the Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Lite. It's a sooper powerful color grading program that lets you edit your videos in a timeline like any other editing program, and because it specialises in color grading, you'll have an easier time getting a pretty image.
THe best way to start learning to edit in my opinion would be both, until you have the chance to upgrade to the adobe programs.
