Hey, I would love a review if you're offering! I run a gaming channel and I'm concerned with my commentary, mostly stuttering, pauses, and "excitement" when something happens. Also, how my channel looks overall to new users.

@JonceGames

Interesting. I wonder why a mod deleted your post? Either way, you're here now so allow me to gaze upon your channel...

It goes without saying that your Clash Royale videos are far better than your Clash of Clans ones in terms of audio, frame design and overall production quality. Recording in your car was a good choice as it really is a portable audio recording studio as it knocks out a lot of background noise.

On the topic of audio, I'm noticing a lot of 'pops' as the audio is clipping when you tap the screen. I understand that you're recording everything on your phone/tablet which is a neat and convenient idea. If you want better production quality out of your videos however, then you really need to consider investing in a seperate microphone to give even more clarity to your voice and eliminate all the tapping pops.

Your overall branding needs some work. When watching your videos and looking at your thumbnails, especially the Clash Royale ones, it gives the impression your channel is a promotional/marketing one for Supercell than it is about 'Jonce Games'. This is emphasised with your current logo design as it just fades and blends into the background of your frame with the Clash Royale logo, characters, colour scheme and design taking precedence.

What you need is a new logo design, unique font/typeface and a colour scheme that you prefer which serves as the basis of your brand and use it for your future videos. Your channel should be about you; how you play, your choices, commentary etc. Apply that to the frame in your future videos. Make sure 'Jonce Games' is what viewers think of when watching your videos and not Clash Royale. You also need a new logo sting as it doesn't match your content at all.

I'm very interested to see how your channel pans out. Mobile games don't trend well at all on YouTube and not a lot of content creators focus exclusively on mobile games. That's changing quite recently with more mobile developers organising brand deals with popular content creators but whether the views justify the cost of these deals remains to be seen. Keep up the good work and good luck with your channel.

@dopeglam

Glad to see you're already thinking about how to improve your videos. It shows that you're keen to keep going with making content on YouTube and are aiming to succeed with it.

Ignoring lighting and editing, what you can improve on is your audio. It sounds like you're using your on camera audio which can work for most applications but to add a little more clarity and quality to your voice, saving up and investing in a shotgun microphone or a lavalier/lapel microphone will help immensely. This suggestion is personal preference as your family and kids take priority so money should be spent on them first and foremost.

I'm noticing you're adding a colour grade to your footage in your latest videos which works for the most part but will looks much better with more lighting. You already know that so no point in restating the obvious.

What you really need to work on is your overall branding, specifically your thumbnails. You've tried several different designs but none of them are consistent. "Racism Towards White People", "NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE" and "HOW TO GET FREE THINGS" are the closest I can find to a design that works for your channel - photo/screenshot on the left hand side, solid colour block with a nice typeface on the right with the video title. "HOW TO GET FREE THINGS" is definitely the best out of the three so use that as a basis for your future thumbnail designs.

Good luck!

@Kane J Goodridge

Channel header and avatar is simple but works well for your branding, especially the colours. Incorporate those colours and even the logo (the cartoon face of yours) into your thumbnails to help give consistency to the design.

Content wise it's on the right track. Your green screen setup in your latest video is done quite well but you need to zoom your camera/webcam out a bit as the top of your head clips out every now and then. For future videos make sure to add your alpha channel to your green screen footage to keep your videos consistent.

Biggest issue for your videos at the moment has to do with your audio. Judging by the way your camera is set up, you're using an external microphone or audio from your webcam. The problem is there's a hell of a lot of background noise seeping through, especially with what sounds like your computer fans (you wouldn't happen to be running an AMD system, would you? :P). Before you start speaking with your recording, record at least 10 seconds of room noise (microphone on, don't make a sound) and use that as a noise sample to cut/reduce it from your final audio file.

If you're using Audacity, search through this thread and look for my advice for @Hellolabgroup with how to do it. If you're using Adobe Audition, the process is very much the same - select the room sample noise, go to Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > Capture Noise print, then select the entire audio recording and go to Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > Noise Reduction and hit OK. If you have a clean sample, leaving the noise reduction process at it's default setting should do the trick.

I hope this helps and good luck with your channel.

@The New Travel Blog

As requested I'll only be looking at your videos from the 'Hostel Questions' playlist.

Considering your videos and channel are focused on travelling I understand the convenience of recording everything on your built in laptop webcam or your phone. It's easier and cheaper to carry around a laptop/phone instead of individual cameras and audio equipment. The catch of course is that the quality isn't as impressive as it could be.

Investing in a separate HD webcam capable of 1080p quality will help a lot immensely and you should also consider bringing a USB microphone with your to help give more clarity and quality to your audio recordings. This suggestion is for the videos where you're recording on your laptop (Hostel Question #11). For recording on your phone, you should consider investing in a Rode smartLav+ which is a lavalier/lapel mic for smart phones (mostly iPhone and select Android devices). You might also want to check out the Rode VideoMic Me or i-XY.

Investing in a stabilising rig for your phone or even a tripod for your phone will help reduce the shaking in some of your shots.

Finally, you need to work on your thumbnails. Since it's a travel vlog, take some photos of the hostels you're staying at and use that as your thumbnail image. Slightly blur that image and apply that nice big, bold text you're currently using and it'll look fantastic. Alternatively, what you can do is apply a solid, transparent colour on 2/3rds of the image and 'cut' the text out of that colour. If you need help visualising it let me know and I'll be more than happy to make a sample for you.

Other than that you're on the right track. Keep it up!

@Tayo

Let's start with the look of your channel. The colours, font/typeface used in your channel header, avatar and latest 4 thumbnails and the overall design is spot on. For future video thumbnails keep those key parts of your brand consistent.

Content wise, I don't hear anything wrong with your commentary at all. There really isn't anything I can advise you on since you seem to know what you're doing. In regards to your lost subscribers, that tends to happen whenever YouTube/Google changes their algorithms and there's nothing you can do about it. Keep uploading videos, be consistent with the uploads and you'll regain those lost subscribers and continue to grow.

Oh. my. goodness. You are insane. I am blown away by how detailed your review is of my channel.
Let me start off my saying thank you so much for taking your time to review some random internet stanger's YouTube channel in such detail. I cannot thank you enough for all the feedback you have given me.
I am looking at options for mics at the moment but doesn't seem like too many of the 3.5mm jack mics actually work with phones because the phone jack is made for headphone/mic, not just mic.
I'm wondering if you checked out my channel before I did my new logo style. I changed my channel art and profile pic to match. I also have decided to use that for my brand. I have also changed the newest thumbnail a bit. I shrunk the Clash Royale logo and put mine on it to advertise me, not Supercell. Thank you for that advice, you are totally right. I also dropped the Clash Royale logo on the backdrop of my videos and put in my brand logo.
If you wouldn't mind, would you look at my latest video and channel art and let me know your final thoughts after those changes? THANK YOU SO MUCH KINK.

You have gained a subscriber and fan

@JonceGames

Thank you for the kind words.

I only got to check out your channel when you first posted in this thread so I had absolutely no frame of reference of what your branding looked like previously. Your thumbnail art is a lot better as now your brand is the major focus while still allowing viewers to know what game is being played within the video. I also like your new setup with the bluescreen although I'm sure even you can hear the difference in audio quality compared to your previous video. As I mentioned, your car is a really good portable recording studio as it isolates sound really well. Taking it indoors without similar noise dampening and acoustic treatment means you'll get a lot more background noise or in your case, a lot more echo.

You're recording everything off from your phone which to be honest, I haven't seen many people do before. All I can say is you're doing a fantastic job with it. I haven't done much research into this but I wonder if you can somehow find a way to incorporate a shotgun microphone within your setup. Take a look at this video as an example:

The way you have everything positioned in your video, a shotgun microphone hanging down from above out of frame might work well. Again, I still have no idea if it's possible to incorporate a shotgun microphone into a pure mobile/tablet setup but I'll definitely look into it. Of course this setup is not cheap so be prepared to save a bit of cash if you do decide to go with it.

You're getting better with every video you make and you'll keep getting better the more you do this. Once again, good luck with your channel and I wish you success.

@That playdough

Starting off with your branding, it's simple but it definitely works to your favour. What you need to do is incorporate your logo (the playdough dude) into your thumbnails, perhaps with different faces or poses to evoke the overall feeling of the video. Thumbnails themselves need work as they look cheap; flat coloured text slapped on a screenshot with a few Google images thrown in for good measure. The flat colours for the text work far better than a gradient but you need to at least darken the screenshot or maybe have a dark gradient/drop shadow behind the text to make it easier to read.

Content wise the videos are well edited and entertaining to watch. I also like that you've upgraded your microphone (or at least have done a better job knocking out the plosives/background noise) and have done a lot of work with your audio mixing. That being stated you still peak your audio at certain points in certain videos which causes a lot of distortion. Be mindful of that.

Overall there really isn't much I can advise you on. Work on the thumbnails, don't peak your audio and keep a frequent upload schedule. You're doing well so far so keep it up!

Thanks a lot dude really appreciate it yea I've been trying to fix audio issues sometimes I get loud. I use pixlr to edit my thumbnails I need to become better at those for sure but thank you so much for your feed back !

@JMAAMusic

I like your thumbnail design; having the JMAA logo in the top left hand corner is fantastic as you can design your thumbnails however you want but still have it consistent with your branding. Good job on that.

What you need to do is work on your art style. I know this is purely subjective in nature so it's your choice whether you take my advice or not but as far as I can see, the art you currently have is poorly drawn and coloured. Lines aren't clean and there's an over emphasis on gradients to show shadows and highlights. In your videos, your drawings take centre stage so you want the art to be absolutely top notch.

This is not only isolated with your drawings but with the images and videos you use in the videos themselves. To me it looks like you're using .jpg images, especially in the 'GOOD JOB, YOUTUBE' video. Load up the video and pause it right at the start. I'm watching this on the highest quality available (720p) and I'm noticing a hell of a lot of artifacting. It looks incredibly poor and does your channel more harm than good. It could also be an issue with YouTube compression or the codec you use to render your videos but whatever it is you're doing with it, you need to fix it as soon as possible.

One last point on art/visual issues - the pentagram you use in your channel header and title card. Yes, you redrew it so props to you on that one but I know a Doom 3 pentagram when I see one. Try to create your own pentagram so it's original and unique to your channel.

The next few issues come down to your audio and vocals. I don't know if you're using a condenser microphone or not (assuming the codec you're rendering in is causing the issues) but your audio quality is quite poor. I can hear a lot of distortion which is distracting. If you haven't, invest in a condenser microphone and pop filter and mix your audio so that it doesn't peak when your voice gets louder. Keep your vocals at an even level.

Finally, you need to work on your speech or at the very least your script. You tend to repeat certain points over and over again and re-use certain words often. That tells me you don't have a script and are improvising a lot of what you say. This isn't a bad point; it's actually really good. However, if you're not focused or don't have a great deal of knowledge on certain subjects, or if you are heavily emotional about a topic, a lot of what you improvise can sound disjointed and unclear. Having a script or a list of points to discuss can help guide your rant videos so that it's easy for your viewers to follow.

You've got a lot of subscribers and a decent number of views which is great to see. You're doing well. Keep it up and good luck with your channel.

@Klink Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to be fiddling around with the gradient and the gaussian blur and hopefully I'll be able to develop a preset. Thank you again so much for your help and thanks for helping me make a thumbnail design. I won't be able to add the gradient to that video which I showed you due to me being so late in uploading a video already, however I was able to center the text.
What program did you use to make your suggestions for thumbnails btw? I'm looking for a better program besides gimp. (It is competent as a freebee though)
