AE help

I just got After effects on friday and realised how hard it was to make special effects.
Are there any beginner tutorials on youtube? also any tips?

I would recommend VideoCopilot.net. It was there I first learnt how to use after effects. Andrew Kramer is essentially a professional visual effects artist. Bear in mind that AE is designed for compositing and motion graphics, and less so for actually generating elements.

YouTube in general has a crazy amount of tutorials. You can look at tutorials from FreddieW (12 days of vfx-mas comes to mind), and the reddit.com/r/aftereffects community has a lot of learning material posted in the sidebar as well.

I would recommend just playing around with effects and seeing what you can achieve. If you just stick to tutorials then you risk only learning how to do the effects that the tutorials are teaching rather than being able to create your own.

I see what you're saying, but the tutorials also include introductions to the basics of the program. You need that kind of foundation in order to know how to operate the program, what it's capable of, and how you can manipulate it in creative ways.

Also if you can find some tutorials that include the AE project file, you can learn a lot from seeing how every individual layer interacts and what the settings are.

I agree, basic tutorials are pretty much essential. I was referring to the tutorials such as on videocopilot and the like, where individual effects are being taught.
