I've heard from some it can work well if you have $1000 to spend, I spend $10 on 1 video and I'm a little impressed with the current results that appeared in only 2 days. Quick stats for the vid. Omfg it pasted like the whole site lol but yeah those 51 views are 2 days worth, I'd be lucky if I got 2 views in a day. But this isn't to say that I'm entirely getting my monies worth so far. I paid a $10 budget to get <3000 views or 1 months worth of advertising whichever comes first. This means I could hit like 500 views and stop and then after 30 days the ad expires. So it's really an investment you have to consider and you have to be sure the video will really work in your favour. The video I'm using is the 1 in my siggy. I felt like this upcoming playthrough deserved a little more views so I'm advertising. If you want, you can wait a month and I can tell you how things went xD but I'll most likely forget lol YouTube advertising

EDIT: Sorry 1st is views, 2nd is estimated minutes watched, 3rd is average view duration. Just from using adWords.
I never tried them but I guess the answer should be:
If you have great (very good quality) content they could be very helpful. If your content is not so great (for whatever adword you have paid) - the result will be not very good (no new subs).
On the old YouTube forums a big YouTuber with high quality content shared that the results used to be very good sometimes.
