Advice on starting a gaming channel.

TheyCallMeHydro

i'm hard to digest and i hate spoon feeding...
So I have the programs to record gaming and Youtube gave me about a year ago the channel www. youtube .com / hydro and I don't want to let the channel go to waste so I was thinking of turning it into a gaming channel. I have uploaded a few videos just to test out commentating.

Whats your advice to starting a gaming channel? Like anything, upload schedule, organization, how to commentate better, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Be funny, record in good quality with a high fps and release videos regularly. Doing something new and inventive is nigh on impossible with yputube nowadays so you must just compete and be better than everyone else. Don't be ashamed to edit your videos together so that there are no gaps in your comedy. If you aren't very funny or your voice hasn't yet broken, I would advise on waiting and improving on these things first. No one wants to sit through ten minutes of boring commentary from the mouth of a 10 year old!

Technical bits:
Upload at least once a week, if not more frequently.
use the H.264 codec on .mp4 files, preferably at 720p or 1080p.
Create good channel branding such as a banner, an intro or outro and thumbnails.

Make sure to establish a personality that you stick to while commentating on games. This personality is what you will be recognised for!

Also I'd recommend playing a game you know a lot about to make you're commentary more interesting. Don't start by going into a game blind because you'll be lost for words lol. Also I don't think being funny is the most of you're concerns. Good video quality & should is a great start!

If you can, have a set schedule. It makes it easier for your subscribers to know when you upload videos.
Be yourself. Don't try too hard to be like someone else, just do what's natural for you.

Try to not have any silent parts at all. If there are a lot of silent parts, either edit them in a creative way or simply cut it from your video.
Always make sure to go through the video before uploading, to make sure there's no errors in the video, or some parts that you intended to cut out. And also to check that the audio is working like it should.

Play games you want to play, not because they're mainstream or new, unless you would enjoy those games of course. It would feel kinda forced to commentate on a game that you only play because other plays it, or that it's new and you are not really interested in the game, just the quick views.

Have a good quality mic. Use an USB microphone that comes with their own soundcards. Especially if you have a lot of hardware noise coming from your computer.
Upload 720p or higher.

That's a few tips.

Well first off, if the channel has not had videos in a while and you are trying to upload to it now I would not suggest it.

Aside from that here are my tips:

Be entertaining - People look for people that entertaining and interesting to listen to in a video. If you talking monotone they will click right out of the video.

Have good channel art - People sometimes look at your channel art and decide whether they should watch your video or not. If your art is good chances are they will watch your video.

Have good HD quality content - This is impeccable as no one accepts SD quality now a days.

Interact with your viewers - if they comment respond!

Be consistent - Don't upload once every 2 weeks on different days. Make a schedule, 1 video every week ON THE SAME DAY is the least you want to post (that is what I have to do with my schedule) but I would recommend 3-5 videos a week.

Good luck man! Would you mind checking out my channel?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think branding is good so far, I have 4 uploads that Im just uploading randomly at the moment, I was thinking of getting to around 10 videos before I make a schedule, just so the channel doesn't look so empty.

Everyone has basically already said it, but I'll say it again. Post as regularly as you can, so hopefully 2-5 videos a week. Make sure that your videos are HD, but no need to have 1080p, but having it is a bonus. Interact with your viewers and answer comments, and try to give them what they want. Balance your audio levels so that the game audio and commentary volumes don't battle each other. And have your commentary be entertaining. Too many Let's Players think that commentary means narrating what they're doing in the game at the time. That's dry and boring, so try to add humor and don't be afraid to be off the cuff.

Thank you(: Im going to try to upload daily if I can. At least till I get a good 20-30 videos, then get a full schedule.

Uploading everyday is all well and good they need to be great quality and for me, playing games all the time makes me.....well...get bored of games. Mix it up a little. Just a note. Good Luck.
