That's a difficult question, because there is no wrong or right way in editing, it's all about what you're trying to do. The best advise I could give is to research and watch some video that you consider well-edited, and try to figure out the pacing and style from that.

Hey buddy, let me give you some advice.
Music is the most important thing, a trailer, video, or film can have. You can have the best edited trailer, or the best film, but if the music sucks, it will ruin the entire video. What does this have to do with editing? Everything!
For montages, compilations, or game trailers, you always want to edit to the music.
For films, machinima, short stories, etc. you edit the music to the film.
What is the difference?
Editing to music:
For montages, compilations, or game trailers, I find the music I want to use first (obviously royalty free) and lay the track down. From there I start grabbing clips and throwing them around on the timeline. Once I think I have enough, I'll start putting them in order depending on what I want to show. Maybe the music starts out slow, so you will want longer clips at first, but then when the music gets faster, then you start adding shorter and shorter clips. If there's a lot of fast beats, change clips every time there's a beat. Lots of options here. Basically FEEL the music, and EDIT to it.
Editing music to a film:
This is easy. You'll want to edit the entire film in order following the script, and add the music in at the end when the film is complete. You'll spend more time "fading in" music, and using just short parts of it, instead of an entire song. It's key that you find the right music as well. This will be the hardest part, finding music that actually fits the film. Once you find it, you'll know, the music will just "fit." You never edit a film to music. Ever!
