I recently decided to dive into advertising my youtube channel and experiment whether it was worth it or not. I read briefly other people's thoughts but I didn't get a clear picture on whether it was worth it to them.
I used AdWords to set up a campaign and from the beginning I had very minimal guidance on what I was supposed to do and not do to get the best results so I had to play around with the options a lot.
- My budget was $5 and Google AdWords estimates that should get you about 250 views per day so I thought that would be a decent start considering the budget. Each time you add a budget Google automatically calculates the average view rate it expects.
- Since this was just an experiment I did not create a 30 sec ad, instead I just promoted a full video that I knew was getting a lot of traffic from other sources.
- The end result, I had over 10k IMPRESSIONS and about 300 views and 40 click throughs. In this case, impressions absolutely meant nothing in terms of increasing views and the 300 views was actually WAY below the average daily view I normally get.
- A few days before my campaign ended that's when I finally had a light bulb moment and understood how to maximize my results so I would definitely like to try another advertisement based on what I learned.
I just wanted to share some tips with you that I wished I knew when I did my ad:
- For your budget make sure to do a minimum of $10, otherwise don't expect to be able to reach out to a large audience
- Create a 20-30sec ad about your channel, I used an entire video just because I was experimenting.
- I noticed a lot of the impressions I got were from random countries and seemed very sketchy so in the campaign I excluded over 20 countries and that way I would ensure my audience was some what legit.
- If your videos are in English make sure to only limit the campaign to an English audience.
- Add in AS MANY keywords that you can think of that relate to your video, for some reason I initially thought the less keywords I put was better (blonde moment)
- Every day keep a close eye on the campaign analytics and it gives you an idea whether there is something you need to adjust to further gather more views.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, I discovered this in the last few days, you NEED to add a link so that people can actually click on the video and takes them to your channel ( I wish I knew about this earlier ahh!!)
- Also, be aware, that the more your video is exposed to people watching an ad the higher chance they might dislike your video...that was one reason I didn't want to do this..
If I remember anything else I'll keep updating, but I hope this at least takes you to the right direction when you start your ads. If you want, maybe start off with $2 budget just to understand how google adwords functions because it can be overwhelming and then once you get the hang of things take it up a notch to $10 and hopefully this should get you better results!
