I don't know what's going on.
We actually did the opposite under the old layout. Whenever a new featured video came out, we would monetize it for a few days to make the money back that we spent on the show-then it would remain featured with no ads for the remainder of the month so that potential new subscribers wouldn't have to sit through ads, which would lead to a greater chance of them subscribing. Ads would then be run on the video again after it was replaced as the feature. I think you're going about it from the opposite way. Loyal viewers are the ones that are willing to sit through your ads to make you money. So while it's nice that you're willing to spare them the ads, you're catering to the one demographic that doesn't require it. Cater to potential subscribers instead and you'll see a bigger gain.
That's interesting. In my opinion, since those later viewers are far less likely to be loyal, or even ever watch a single other video of yours ever, I don't mind that. It's just a matter of personal preference then. And I know that these viewers would be willing to sit through the ads because they care, but by that same logic I feel it's a nice token gesture to not force them to do that. Just my opinion.[DOUBLEPOST=1369343664,1369342926][/DOUBLEPOST]
yeah man i agree but im sure youtube would have to make a new system to do that and we know thats not happening it would be a neat feature though
Oh, no! I'm not talking about changing the YouTube system, I'm just saying that individuals should maybe try making these changes. This is something I do, and I know a few people do it as well. I just wondered what other people thought about it. But yes, a new feature would be more trouble than it's worth!
I thought long and hard before enabling monetization. In fact, I asked my subscribers permission first. And I asked them which types of ads they'd prefer if any.
I think it's enough of a YouTube standard that people tend not to mind (and my subs were all for me switching them on). But I think it depends on how much time and effort you're putting in as well.
I know personally, I've sunk over $5000 into software/hardware/etc on my channel, to say nothing of the 20-30 hours a week I spend creating the content. Using ad revenue to cut that down seems quite justified to me. But along with that, I feel like I have a responsibility to continue producing good content, and investing that revenue wisely.
I think if I weren't spending as much time, and was producing poor-quality stuff, I'd feel much more torn about it.
That's understandable for you, because you seem to really need every penny you can get, and your videos are of much higher production value than mine. I think the basic principle could still apply there, but considering your position, plus the higher view count you get, I get where you're coming from.
