I made a short 30 second video which went viral, over 300k views. Sadly even though it was monetized I hardly earned $100 for it. Is this because it was only a short 30 second video or what? I'm surprised at the low amount I made on it.

My guess: The ads were about the same length as your vid, which pretty much meant people weren't gonna click it.
Or something along that line, you see a long ad on a short vid, it doesn't really appeal much.
 
Here's a theory:

You can think of advertising like investment, they'll invest in you if they see that you have potential.
A viral video is nice, but it doesn't necessarily mean consistent growth in the future.
So they might not put as much money into your advertising.

I dunno.

I had a 33 second video that randomly made over $100 in one day from just 7,000 views... Besides that day it has mostly been low paying for the most part. Not sure what the hell happened, but I'm not complaining! I've never had any other video on Youtube make anything close to that compared to the views
 
Short videos usually only display overlay ads (which have very low CPMs) thus earning you very little revenue compared to a 3 or 4 minute video.
 
Short videos always get fewer and less valuable ads. Vine channels have notoriously low CPM for example.

Not always true. I have some long mountain biking videos that make less per view than my 33 second dog video that does really well
