I don't know if it's necessary, but I have one for my main channel. My tutorial channel didn't need one because it's linked to my business and I already have a business web site. Right now the only channel that doesn't have it's own dedicated website is my gaming channel, but as a second channel, I didn't see the need.
 
Pewdiepie recently launched his new website. I think Youtube is not happy with that.

Youtube deleted (yes, deleted) gamersyde.com Youtube channel because apparently Youtube didn't like that the channel served to bring people to their website.

They worked a lot on that channel, they still got banned. That's pretty bad, after all the work they did there.

Gamersyde provide highest quality videos than Youtube, even you can download them and stream in real HD.

Well I can see YouTube having an issue, if the videos are posted separately on the channel and web site. But if you embed the YouTube videos onto the web site, then YouTube should have absolutely no issues with that whatsoever. That's what I do.
 
In this day and age of social media, I don't really see much of a point in having websites for the channel. Just have a Twitter and/or Facebook and that will satisfy most people
