I think they help. I made one last year and its a good way to communicate with subs etc. It really depends how many views your getting and if its worthwhile buying a host and that.
 
Yes, you should eventually make one, Youtube is just a platform to use.
It could go under (doubt anytime soon) but things to not last forever. (and on the internet the process is sped up) So having your own home on the internet itself, is a very useful tool. (Especially if YT rules and regulations prevent you form certain things you do)
 
It's good if you're a big channel with a lot of followers who can afford to hire people to design and maintain a website, but for most people, no.
 
Having a website can be useful because you can use it for linkbacks. You can also do some exclusive stuff for fans and it can help to expand on your brand.
For example, if a photographer likes to vlog his or her photography trips you could also drive traffic to a website with a photo portfolio\galleries. You could also sell prints and otherwise monetize a blog or something with ads.
