See thats the problem, your approaching it wrong. Its not about playing, or being good at it, its about taking an emotion with yourself and sharing it with the rest of the world around you. And that ought to be the driving goal of learning, since you want to be able to express that emotion better and better, and with that it will be less learning and more experimenting : )

I feel that way about my writing actually! So I suppose instead of playing the blues I could write the blues!

Its the same thing in the end of the day.

Every expression based art from acts nothing more than a conduct for us to showcase either an emotion or a feeling. It is our way to take that medium (movies, literature, poetry, music, video games even in some cases) and try to convey something to another person in the most special way.

And the best way to do it, is to try to minimize the medium the medium. You see that with all the greats:
Jimi Hendrix did not play music to convey an emotion, Jimi Hendrix was emotion
Ernest Hemingway wasn't just a writer, his works wear soaked in what he wanted to tell, that they diminished the medium.

By focusing mainly on the emotion and the feeling that you are convening, rather than the medium you are using, music, writing and so on, you make your end result much much more pure in my opinion.

That is my problem with a lot of modern music, a lot of it is good. However, they bury it under layers of effect, random instruments, clips and samples, added dubs and stuff, and while that is impressive from a sound engineering point of view, somewhere in all that attempt to create the perfect sound or the most complex sound, that simple honest and primal to some way feeling gets lots.

Amen! You put it into words! I think that's why some of the best kind of music is acoustic. Just plain beautiful melodies.

Well thats what I found also, and why I am a big fan Robert Johnsons works as you can see from my channel. And I strongly advise checking his original work, since I can not due it justice enough.

But you can have electric, as long as its their for a reason, and not as a cheap "gimmick"

And example would be this song, it has a lot of stuff going for it, but it still retains the spirit of it, of what is important:

Also, skip to 3:16 if you cant watch it full, and tell me with a straight face it does not give you the chills.
