YouTube's "new" MidRoll ad update

You might have heard about YouTube’s recent Midroll Ad update, and if you’ve been concerned about its impact on your revenue, I wanted to break it down in a way that makes sense.

YouTube announced that Midroll Ads marked as “interruptive” will no longer play during videos.
  • Interruptive Ads = Ads that play mid-sentence or at a crucial moment, increasing the chance that viewers leave.
  • Non-Interruptive Ads = Ads that appear naturally during pauses or transitions, making for a better experience.
Their goal? Fewer interruptive ads, more natural placements.

When YouTube rolled this update out, many creators panicked because:
  • They saw old Midroll Ad placements marked in red (meaning they wouldn’t play).
  • YouTube’s messaging made it sound like this was a sudden, new restriction on monetization.
YouTube admitted that they explained it poorly and that they’re working on clarifying things.
But here’s the important part: YouTube’s Ad System has ALWAYS worked this way.
That means if a Midroll Ad was placed in a bad spot before, it likely wasn’t playing anyway. The difference? Now YouTube is actually showing us this information rather than keeping it behind the scenes.

This Update is GOOD, Instead of blindly placing Midrolls, creators can now:
  • See which ads were actually playing.
  • Adjust placements to increase revenue.
  • Let YouTube’s automated system improve ad slots (major improvements coming in May!).
Essentially, this update gives you more control over your earnings—YouTube isn’t cutting revenue, they’re giving insight into what was always happening.
