Uploading your songs to bandcamp or soundcloud puts them under creative commons license, which IMO is superior to copyright

Creative Commons is just a group of copyright licenses, and many are very permissive - not what you want to use if you want to retain control of the work. So be sure to look at the license specifics when uploading. The Attribution + Noncommercial + NoDerivatives (by-nc-nd) license is the only one which is very restrictive on reuse.
