Understanding Music Videos

I've seen many people create music videos on Youtube, some only had the video 1 minute long, I think this is because they just made the video, no music, others have played their guitar for the music, sang, and made the video, which was about full length, and I might have seen people sing, create the video, but not have made the music, but was full length.
I'm not fully sure what I want to ask but ...

What can I do legally that can be monetized/not monetized?

How can I have a video with the music of a song(somewhat popular), me singing it, edit it, and monetized if possible?

U can sing covers - and credit the artist. There is no law saying you can't use their lyrics. Try to be creative, although you have to recreate the instrumental, you cannot use the artist's as far as I know. Good luck.
