Tips on How to Edit Faster

What things do you do to make sure you edit most efficiently? Of course, you'll get faster the more you do it but beyond that what advice is there for making sure you're getting the job done as quickly as possible?

getting the job done as quickly as possible

is it a job really? :p

  • good knowledge of the software and plugins that you use.
  • using both keyboard and mouse. If possible split edit in two screens.
  • distancing from your edit. It is not everything useful, think what people want to see,
not what you want to show them (e.g. your new shoes in a tech review video... XD )
  • having your content well organised even tagged in the disk (including a backup)
a backup = two or three backups... :p
  • NOT taking breaks, you will lose control (well, ok this happens to me...)
  • Asking for revisions only from people that have an idea on editing.
  • Listening to a lot of new (to your ears) music, watching other peoples videos.
  • Reading some theory on editing, color and other related stuff.
  • Psychology. Studying just the basics. People ususally laugh in this tip but it works...
  • Time is not an issue. Edit takes whatever time needed to be ready to be published...
And a last controversial one, don't follow the trends in color grading and transitions.
If you want a video to be evergreen 10 years after, stick to the basics.
Although people usually say that they cut a video/movie/whatever it is actually an assembly
(as A. Hitchcock said) and you have to be careful on the parts that assemble the whole project.

Hope some of those to help
:)

Make sure when you record you are prepared and don't have to cut out too much of what you recorded. That makes things go nice and smooth for sure. Can't help it if your sick or something though i guess. but mostly just practice is what sped up my process. and a better computer so render times are better haha

It's figuring out how to pre-produce parts of your video. All of my audio is edited before I get to the rendering stage. I know that my format is consistent. My intro is pre-recorded and can be dropped into place. The second I step into Sony Vegas Pro, I can get through a typical edit in less than 30 minutes because I have all of the parts ready to insert where necessary.

organize your files, have a plan ready for the edit (music, format, story), watch tutorials in your spare time on the software you use. this combined with putting in practice on the software and trial/error are the best ways to learn.

Sony Vegas Pro 13 if you aren't doing any more than splitting, adding a facecam, and other basic stuff like that. But if you are looking for 3D effects I would say After Effects CC 2015. Hope I helped. If you use this it is pretty simple to add basic features. It also should take very little time

For faster editing you have to use the keyboard a lot or even us specialised control panel. Recently I saw lots of control panels for editing and I was amazed how much easier is to edit when you have trackball, sliders, separate buttons for cut, edit, fade in/out, play, record, etc... And faster hardware helps a lot for faster editing.
