Thinking of trying Adobe Premiere...

Just realizing I wrote "Afterafters" instead of "Aftereffects". Derp.

But seriously, thanks for all the input, guys! I think I'm gonna go down to the book store again, and have a look. If my bank account allows, I might take the plunge and buy it....
 
It can be quite difficult to get to grips with in terms of adding keyframes and creating transitions and what not, but the process of cutting and splicing is pretty straightforward. There's also always the option of Premiere Elements, a watered down edition of the full premieree software at a fraction of the price. I haven't tried it in years, but it's certainly far more user-friendly and a smoother learning curve.
