You can enable monetization but not monetize your videos. I do that on my gaming channel. Not one video on my gaming channel is monetized, but I have custom thumbnails.

You can monetize, there are few games and companies that allow that, the latest one is Valve, they allow monetization. But you shouldn't get YT partnership, don't rush, you can easily f**k up your future. And yeah, it can be a problem with getting partnership in future, actually it will take longer time. For me, it ruined my RPM partnership, couldn't apply. Just don't do it.

You can still join a network with adsense enabled, it wouldnt affect you in anyway. But just make sure you dont monetize your gaming videos when on a YouTube partnership. You can enable monetization and get the thumbnails and you will be fine as long as you don't claim the money from them.
I do that currently and I'm signing with a network atm.
