I'm not a complete idiot i know what partnering is but what are the benefits of actually doing it? my channel is small but i think my contents funny and actually rivals some of the top people doing similar content style. In general what is the best thing for a small channel to do?

As a small channel, it's best to wait and not rush yourself into a partnership. Doing so often ends up you getting a worse end of the deal. A larger channel would more likely be able to negotiate with a network for better contract terms, as well being able to have more choice.

I will generally agree with Dananuh, there are a few benefits. These do not instantly make you famous. If you stop with consistency then you will be forgotten quickly.

First benefit: Shows - a show allows you to group your content into one "show". Most of the time that show will appear at the top of all YouTube and Google searches. That is of course that there isnt already an established show with that name.
2nd: Search relevance. Supposedly 2 videos both being equal, one is by a partner and one is not, the partner one will be above the unpartnered one on search results. YMMV with this one
3rd: instant monetization: with adsense you have to wait to get approved and YouTubes terrible automated process often times will deny a perfectly acceptable video. Partners do not have to face this. Instead they get to put an ad up immediately by clicking 1 button.

Hope this was helpful. Smaller channels still need to bust their butts to get views. Partnership can help but its not a potion for instant fame.

Can people use the search bar or look around on youtube ?? It seems not. Dan has cleared everything up.

There are not many benefits you get when joining a network. The banner is gone, now everyone can have a banner (through 1channel layout) and Custom Thumbnails , you can get through monetization along with a few Youtube modules.

Small channels = bad contract (live by this)

Just don't rush into anything while you're small. Networks find YOU as their product, you're making them profit. This is mainly why they partner you.

Smaller channels often rush into partnership far too quickly, I'd advise waiting longer to see how far you can grow your channel so that you have more leverage when discussing terms with a network.

To partner with YouTube directly all you have to do is enable monetization on your account (literally a couple of clicks), as for with a network, it varies depending on which network you wish to join.

I respectfully disagree. YouTube monetization is NOT partnership. Its a very common misconception I hear almost daily. People assume because you can monetize a video you are at the same level as partner. Here is an independant article on the topic that may help clarify it some. Add http> bit.ly/15FOIEd

Hope this helps!

Feel free to disagree all you want but even YouTube refers to this as partnership now.
