even if you have a gaming account you can still enable monetization. Done it on 3 gaming accounts so far with no problems. Just make sire you have no strikes and you'll be all good.
 
If you use Adsense on your gaming channel there are a few things likely to happen: (1) You eventually get a content id strike - which will disable all your features including monetization (for older games this isn't as likely), (2) A disgruntled fan attempts to mess with your Adsense standing.
One of the more important things I'd advise joining a network for is the Adsense/Monetization protection. If you get disabled from Adsense, it's a lifetime ban for *you* (not just that channel) and being disabled will cause all of your features to be disabled as well. It's very hard and complicated to circumvent these issues once they happen.
