Is it better to just use Google Adsense or to partner with a Network?

Hey guys!! I'm a beauty vlogger on YouTube, and I'm new to YTtalk :) I decided to get on here bc I am still trying to learn how all this YouTube stuff works and hopefully you guys can help me out! I recently was contacted by a network and have been emailing back and forth with them for a while. When they sent me the contract I noticed that they are offering a 70/30 revenue share and a 2yr contract. When I first saw that amount I was really surprised! Wanting to take 30% just seems like a lot to me. Is this a standard offer from a Network? I am wondering if it is best to partner with a network or to just stay independent a keep using Google Adsense. I feel like since they wanna take 30% I will end up making less money than just using Google Adsense. They say they will increase my CPM rate which will help me make more money, but I honestly am not sure how the whole CPM thing works anyway haha I have also heard that it is a risk to stay an independent channel just using Google Adsense bc your Adsense account can get disabled out of no where and you will no longer be able to make any money. I would really appreciate any help/info you guys can give me!! Thanks so much!! :)

Hello and welcome to yttalk. 70/30 is not a bad contract some people get offers splits of 50/50. does it say anything in the contract if you want to get out of it in a year you can? We also have the same split on our channel and we make more money now then when we had just adsense. Also who is the comapny that is offering you the contract.

This all depends on what it is you need, how big your channel is, and what you're looking for. First off, they're telling you you will make more money, that's BS. You will make less money. Right now you're getting your full pay from adsense without a 3rd party taking a cut. Any network you join is going to take a cut, thus, less money. But there are some perks, such as being able to monetize without hassle, and being protected from click bombing. If you already have no problems monetizing, then it's not a big deal if you stay with adsense, unless you're worried about getting click bombed. (maybe if you have alot of haters) We all have the banner and thumbnails now, so that's no longer a perk, ultimately networks don't do alot these days. For me its necessary on my music channel cause I can't monetize without them. (adsense just can't seem to grasp it's actually my music) but without that factor, all you're really getting with a network is a support team (most networks "support" isn't anything to be too excited about) and the label "partner" (some people are partnered with almost no subs so that's not much to brag about either)" So I mean... if you need the monetization, or are at a level where the network will promote you, then yes, having a network is a great thing. But networks won't really give you promotional help until you're raking in major dollars for them, as long as you're a small channel who's off their radar, they're really just this middle man who might respond kindly to e-mails with generic advice and take a cut of your earnings.

There is benefits to both.

Networks can offer you many things that Adsense cannot, for example:
  • Click-bomb protection - which helps prevent against false clicks of ads to generate income, this can get your adsense banned. With a network, it can be prevented.
  • Increased revenue - this is not guaranteed, please note that, but you are more likely to earn more from a network because their ad-sales team sells ad's at a higher rate than adsense. What this basically means is you get more money for view.
  • Access to free music library.
  • Dashboard to track and manage earnings.
This is just some of the perks you can get, they obviously vary between networks.
What networks cannot offer you, which many believe to be true is:
  • Promotion - Nearly all networks will not give you any form of promotion whatsoever. They can however provide you tools which you can use to help promote yourself. Networks only generally promote a channel if they are an asset to the network, this means being a large channel.
  • Any form of licenses (particularly for music or gaming) - What many people also don't understand is that networks do not hold licenses to allow you to monetize the use of a copyrighted song and or game. Gaming will go under fair-use, whereas songs are a whole new level. Cover songs can be monetized under Fullscreen however because they have a deal with UMG to allow this.
Again there is other assumptions people may make about a network so it's best to ask them yourselves.
I think this thread may help you if your interested, it covers some of the aspects of a partnership with a network:

Are you sure you make MORE money than adsense? This goes against everything I've heard from jeff and Rich and quite a few people.

I'd say 70-80% is probably average.

"Will" is not a word any network should be using. They cannot guarantee you will earn more with them than with YouTube directly. You might earn less depending on how much you're making now directly and how high your RPM is. If it's high then you could be losing potential revenue by cutting 30% off of that.

I have also heard that it is a risk to stay an independent channel just using Google Adsense bc your Adsense account can get disabled

It happens... to those who aren't careful. The risk is low - probably 1 in (5)-10,000.

Really thats weird, but we have made more since not having just Adsense. We use to go months just making a dollar or two.

Yeah this is what I normally hear from everyone. You're basically giving them money to protect you from click bombing and allow you gaurunteed monetization. I've never heard of someone earning more from a network, just people being able to get deals that take very little off of their current earnings.[DOUBLEPOST=1372011471,1372011362][/DOUBLEPOST]

Hmmm... then I guess just take what I'm saying with a grain of salt Kelly Marie . I'm not going by first hand experience, it's all hear say and just conclusions I've come to after talking to people on the forum. I guess maybe you could make more? Most everyone I've talked to say it's always less, just if you get a good deal not significantly less.

A lot of people can earn more. However, with a 2 year contract she's being offered she cannot try it out and see which side it turns to - loss or gain. So if she loses, she is stuck losing revenue for 2 years.
