I dont have personal experience with this however facebook for example is created to onky show your content to a set amount of people instead of showing it to all of your followers. So paying for a bigger reach is exactly what facebook is trying to push you to do.
In tip videos on this topic people say if you content isnt reaching a lot of people on its own, paying for it wont make a lot of difference.
Paying for a wider audience should only be on your agenda if you are launching a bussiness (bringing out a new book, a new single, new merch etc.)
