How To Make Ultra-Clear Thumbnails?

So I output my thumbnails in 720p .png and they are around 1.5mb in size. Very clear when viewing them but once uploaded and attached to a video they aren't as clear as I would like them to be. When looking at other users thumbnails such as pewdiepie, his are ridiculously good quality (in terms of clarity and resolution)

Should I be using a different file type?

Ya, if you can post it here that would be awesome.
My thumbnails are as clear as Pewdiepie's if not, they are clearer.
If you make them in Photoshop create a 1280 by 720 pixel canvas then save it as png, if the png size is to big just save it as a jpeg, that should lower the size while still keeping the quality!

I think you can upload at higher resolution, as long as it's 16:9 aspect ratio.

They look fine to me, are you sure it's not just your monitor making the pixels stand out because YouTube thumbnails are so small?
