First, you have to have good content. If you don't then no matter what you do, you won't get any views.

Second, it depends. If you're looking for long-time viewers, I've found that forums are the best way to go. You could always advertise through Adwords, but it really depends on your add. I did a campaign for 2 weeks. It didn't help me out at all. Then you have people like Ohaple who did the same thing with a smaller budget, and he gained 70 subscribers in a day.

Other than that, twitter, facebook, reddit, etc.

I send messages to people who comment on videos similar to mine and many of them watch my video and I've gotten my past 40 subscribers from that method pretty quickly

thats spam and is against youtubes ToS and can get you banned
