Common issues that keep you under 1,000 subscribers

Hi, much like SomeGuyDude I am also a let's play channel so I've already set the bar high for myself haha.

It doesn't sway me though. I have seen videos of top youtubers that all say do what you are passionate about and makes you happy, and the posts on different forums all say the same so I have chosen the path of a lets player. I also have a strong dramatic background and both myself and my friend who I record with used to be part of an improvised comedy group for a few years before the group disbanded, so in an attempt to be different from other lets players we are trying to intergrate improvised comedy into our videos and channel.
Some videos we will do as a normal lets play with our own personalities and sense of humour, so the audience can see us as ourselves and normal people.
Other videos will be more improv orientated and will try to merge "whos line" style games into video games.

"Who specifically is this content for?"
Our content specifically in my eyes are for people who either suffer from depression or have generally had a bad week and feel down. People who use gaming and youtube as a form of escapism. I want them to feel welcome when watching us and feel like, as SomeGuyDude put it, like they are hanging out with us. To help them distract their mind and laugh with us at the silly things we come out with and the funny scenarios that happen in game.

It's what I use gaming for and I know majority of my friends also use gaming as escapism. The best gaming sessions we all have is when we are with friends. And I want to try and get that feeling across to my viewers.

If you mean age range then I guess 15yrs and up.

"Why should that person care?"
Because laughter is the best medicene...just like my spelling it seems....No matter the troubles, the situations we are put through. Laughter and happiness keeps us pushing forward and helps us to forgive and forget.
it's something also Bob Marley believed in.

Why does your channel matter?
I it hits home and helps give people that escapism. Then it will matter more than words can explain. For me? It will matter a lot knowing that I have helped in a small way and made enough impact on someone to help calm their mind and keep them walking forward with a smile on their face.

What difference does it make in that person's life?
It will make a subtle yet powerful difference in their own self esteem and confidence. By simply resting your mind from the crap and doing or watching something you enjoy most, helps thin the clouds in your otherwise gloomy skys. Sounds weird that I'm hoping to achieve this with gaming videos and acting like a goof haha

What's their motivation for wanting to subscribe to your channel in the first place?

Well its a weekend show called "weekend noobs" Hopefully due to go live this weekend. So videos will be uploaded every weekend, that way viewers know when new content will be available. Also, I hope, they will click with and understand our sense of humours and personalities. The life isnt to be taken too seriously. You are only here once so why not enjoy it while you can?
Also we are sexy and rub oil over our bodies?.....dunno if that counts?

How easily does your channel answer those subconscious questions for them?

STOP ASKING SO MANY QUESTIONS!! AHHHHH!!!!

Well I'm actually suprised.....I thought it would take me ages to find answers for those questions but they seemed to have naturally rolled out my brain.

I only hope my friend and partner understand my reasonings and feel the same way because they are both apart of the team as well.

I've read through about 10 pages of this forum and it has given me some insight.
I only worry my videos are a bit long at the moment so I will defo focus on future videos being much shorter

I have to chuckle at Tim's last point about producing better content. As an example we are a lets play channel and have over a month of prerecorded daily content and we just started uploading about a week ago. We ran into a steep learning curve on how to do improve comedy for 10 to 15 min strait as our play sessions are uncut for the most part. Basically, we start the episode and we have to be on until it ends.

When we started recording Mario it was the first play through we ever did and when we finally started recording Zelda we had already recorded 25 episodes and had already worked out a lot of the things that don't work in the format we are using. However, we aired the first episode of Mario one day and Zelda the next. You can really tell the improved quality and chemistry of our comedy in the Zelda play through and it is almost embarrassing when I compare the two series right now.

That kind of hits home as I think about all the effort I have been putting into learning how to improve our content. I like that someone finally put that point into plain words so I could read it and just take it in.

This was great advice Tim. Thank you for posting it as it gives me three main objectives to focus on as I grow. I am pushing to that first 50 sub milestone and I'm hoping this helps us push over it and onto the next goal.

Great advice Tim. I would love to know how to apply that advice to a gaming channel. Which mine is. To be fair, I haven't uploaded regulalry in a few months solely due to going through a separation.. and not having a place to actually do youtube.
Now I do have a place and am settled, and with a year of experience and figuring it is what I want to push.. I started uploading daily videos again from Monday.

Thing is, I don't care about subs so much.. yes of course I would love 10k subs.. but hardly helpful if I only get 40 views a video. Which is what I get.. and very few likes or comments, usually from gamers.
I'm only at 460 subs and can't seem to grow it. I care about views.. and more importantly, view to like ratios and driving interaction and engagement.

What I want to know is: My targeted audience is non content creators.. I want my community to be full of people who love watching youtube, who love the games I play and can feel a connection to me.. a community in which we can hang out and enjoy let's plays and share in the stories together and identify with the characters we meet along the way.. or for shorter games.. just get in and have a laugh.. all sharing in that common ground and love of video games.

I just can't seem to tap into that market. I have been working on my thumbnails, my tags and my description for a while.. spent time learning to improve audio, facecam etc.. any advertising or promotion I do seems to just get lost in thin air.. and I have a core group of content creators who watch my content and about 5 content consumers who like me for me and the games I play.

How do you attract content consumers to your channel? I realise I have been a little absent due to circumstances and appreciate essentially I have to get that consitency going again with daily videos, but I would love to know the answer to this and what anyone thinks I am doing right / wrong?

I do plan on being far more active on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, just in an interactive fun way to drive engagement.. beyond that what else am I to do?

I'm honestly doing all of these tips and still getting little results. 8 months of pumping out the best content I can and spreading the word and I'm at 60 subs and 1000 views. My main problem I'm facing is getting my videos to rank in the YouTube search. I use the best tags possible and I'm ranking very low. For example, my Bloodborne Let's Play has the best broad and specific tags possible and ranks on pages 30 or farther (ranking after showing like every YouTuber ever and ranks after Minecraft videos in a search for Bloodborne Let's Play.) Any idea what I could do here? Thank you for your time and sorry to bother you.

I understand what you mean, been struggling with subs for a little while. But with dedication, the correct utilization of things, anyone can get "Big". Just gotta believe in yourself. :)

I'm really new to the youtube game and I already see the challenges that come along with it but this post was great help into what I should be improving! Thanks for all the advice ! :)

This post was very helpful! Thank you!
I'm just wondering: when I started my channel, I had this goal in my head to help stimulate people, bring in some positivity and show examples of fortunate people who did just that. However, I noticed that I have so many things that I love to do, that I don't want to tie myself to one specific subject. I want to film about the things that I see in life and that's very diverse.. So would this actually mean that I will never get a lot of subscribers, just because I don't have that specific goal in my mind? My most important goal is to use YouTube as a way of creativity and inspiration, and I hope to stimulate people to love life as well, while not dictating it them in their face.

And I also wonder, is it still possible anno 2016 to get a lot of subscribers, as I feel the saturation point of YouTube has been reached in many ways.

Thank you!
