It works in a couple of ways. For example, when someone subscribes to your channel, everyone in your box pops up and Youtube asks if you would like to subscribe to these channels as well. Some people can't be bothered and just hit subscribe to all.
They also appear on your channel, so it can drive traffic to the channels in your box. It's just helping eachother out really.
 
Go on your channel and go to 'Add Channels', there will be a box where you can add a link to the channel you want in the box. Just put the link there and press the '+' button and hit apply!
