For starters, I will state that I have a network partner associated with the channel discussed below.
I'm trying to get a grasp of what I am looking at when I look at my revenue and ad rate statistics in the analytics section of Creator Studio, and also correlate it with my partner reports.
This starts with a really basic question, but it's going to lead up to another qestion.
In creator studio, if you go to "Ad rates" it shows the YouTube Ad Revenue.
When you go to "Revenue" it shows the user's revenue, which is about 60% of the YouTube Ad Revenue in my case.
Hovering over the question mark on the YouTube ad revenue box, it says the following:
"Estimated gross revenue from all Google-sold advertising sources and DoubleClick partner-sold advertising sources, for the selected date range and region. YouTube Ad revenue is subject to month-end adjustment and does not include partner-served advertising. YouTube Ad revenue should not be confused with revenue, or net revenue, which factors in your revenue-sharing agreements."
So is that 40% going to my ad partner, or to YouTube/AdSense? If I were to disconnect from my ad partner, would I receive 100% of the YouTube ad revenue, or would that 40% go back toYouTube / AdSense?
Clicking on the question mark next to "Your Estimated Ad Revenue" it states:
"Estimated revenue from AdSense and DoubleClick ads for the selected date range and region. This number does not include revenue from any partner-sold ads."
So this would seem to indicate that the 40% is going to AdSense. Partner served advertising can be additional revenue to the AdSense/Doubleclick served ads, and the partner would get a cut of just those ads?
When I receive revenue reports from my ad partner, they are basically taking nothing, just a couple of dollars. For example, in January their share was $6 out of $600 of net revenue. So 1%. Unless they are getting some of that 40% that I don't know about. If the 1% number is it, they are not doing much in the way of their own ads.
Off-youtube revenue is zero for both them and me. They are not currently doing anything with the videos off-youtube.
Looking at Traffic Sources, basically all the hits on my videos are what youtube calls "organic" which is suggested videos and browse features, about 50/50. Then another 20% or so from playlists. A very small percentage is from off-site, and none of them are from places that would be inspired by the ad network.
YouTube red is starting to show a small amount of revenue from a small amount of hits.
Basically I am wondering if the partnership between me and the network is useful at all to either of us. I have read here and also in my conversations with my ad network that there are certain kinds of ads that they can show (no-skip ads etc.) that I would not be able to without a partner, thus might account for some of the income I have been getting, in which case it would be advantageous to me to keep the ad partner. But I don't have any data without the partner because the channel wasn't monetized before that.
I have been happy with the ad partner, they've been very communicative and above board about everything both before and after signing up, I just don't know if they are doing anything for me at this time. They are focused primarily on top shelf viral videos, and the one that I have has had its 15 minutes of fame, so they don't really do any special marketing with my channel and I'm not taking advantage of their other services for representing my videos when the news comes calling. I have a few videos that do very well, but not explosively viral anymore.
Before I go have a conversation with them, I thought I'd try to straighten out these questions here and get an outside opinion of "what's doin". Currently I don't think I am losing money to the ad partner, but they also aren't helping to make more. That's my take.
let me know what you all think.
