To a point you can call this understanding. Like in the case you know her condition so you are understanding and do not make fun of it as she is putting effort into dealing with it, just like you have.
Respect in my experience is earned, if you give it to someone first, and they do not return the respect then you are entitled to not give a #@!# about them.
