Your First Goals/Aims/Ideas?

I have heard many guys started to create videos not in order to monetize them, but they firstly had the other goals, like, create a library of useful content for themselves, create some kind of business card for themselves without any future plans to proceed, learn video editing and video recording as a part of their university/college course, create a video diary of their learning music/languages/programming/drawing/etc for improving their skill and so on. I believe, having the other goal before your channel starts getting monetized is the best strategy because before you will be able to start monetization of your channel, 1, 2, 3, or 5 years may pass, especially if your channel is for a really specific group, for instance, for linguists, vector artists, or other.
So, my question is: what are your first goals before you get monetized?
I believe it might be too depressive to wait for starting monetization endlessly if you don't have any other goals except that, and if your target audience is narrow enough...

First goals should be to define your niche, learn to make engaging videos, learn the platform and how it works, get into a routine of filming, editing, uploading, promoting. Once you have a few dozen videos, a few subs and a few views, then you can focus on taking the channel to the next level and monetize.

I make my videos to learn something new (YouTube, video editing) and it's also a documentation of what I learned and created. Together with that I hope to help other people with my tutorials! If I could monetize that, that would be a great bonus.
