Why youtubers use a Photo Camera to record the videos ?

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this topic is not on the right place,

I'm about to buy some gear to start recording materials for a Youtube channel and video for other online outlets.

I am wondering why is it that all the videos about gear I see they say they are recording with Photograph cameras instead of Video cameras like a 4k camcorder ?

Thanks,

I'm not really following what you're saying, aren't all camera's photograph camera's? I mean, recording videos really just means taking hundreds of photos per minute and showing them one after the other to fake something moving. Also, if you are thinking of starting a YouTube Channel with no prior experience in photography or cinematography, I would recommend just using your phone camera or a cheap $100 camera to start, because getting a fancy and souped-up camera isn't going to make you famous, and they are a lot of money to blow on something you don't even know if you are going to like doing. If you have the budget and are set on a 4k camera, go for it! But, if you are trying to YouTube for the money or fame, a 4k camera isn't going to help you. I record my videos in 1080p because that's what most people view them at, very few view them at 4k or 1440p, although I might switch to 1440p soon, as soon as the extreme prices drop. Just use whatever you have right now, and if you like it, make an investment into your hobby if you can!

Idk either but I like people who do this $%$^ by any means cause it means I gotta grind harder

aren't all camera's photograph camera's?

nope, there are dedicated camcorders from consumer to prosumer to pro to cinema
that can record for hours uninteruptably and without the needs
of all those external gear that dslrs supplementary need to operate
and
there are dslr or mirrorless that do high resolution photography and also video plus
all those handy enhancements (in body stabilization, extremely shallow depth of field, etc...)

Although there is this "cinematic" and 4K "need" hype on Youtube, it is at the most Brand promotion
as long as you correctlty point that even a decent phone usually can do the job nowadays.

Many creators use a DSLR or mirrorless camera for video recording due to the ability to customize video settings, such as exposure and depth of field among others, to get unique, cinematic and higher quality footage. Raw footage from a DSLR can also give a wide array of options when it comes to editing.

A good consumer level camcorder on the other hand is better suited for just point and shoot situations, with more auto options. For camera beginners (like myself) this can work just fine and it is more straightforward to use. In this day and age most of flagship cell phones are also an incredible option for video if you are just starting off.

I have no idea what your budget is but if you are trying to enter the 4k territory I strongly suggest you look at the Sony AX53, I recently got one on sale and it is very easy to use.

The simple answer is that youtubers aren’t very intelligent in videography and cinematography. They use word of mouth as their guidance. So the first few big youtubers said their favorite cameras were point and shoots like the canon g7xii or dslr photo-based camera like canon rebel t6i, so every other youtuber went and got it and recommended it Since those are good enough for video, people stick with those.

In reality, truly great video should be coming from mirrorless cameras or something like a Sony video camcorder. Not a DSLR or point and shoot. At the level of millions of subscribers, those youtubers need to be using professional digital cinema cameras, but they’re probably using their same old t6 or whatever, “it’s good enough” and they never strive for greatness.

From my experience in video/photo/graphic/audio creation I can give you this advice:

Lens is the most important factor which impacts video quality

Camcorders don't have option to take photos DSLRs have but are not with all features for Video creation(Which in most case you do not need!)

From start I remove phones.
Why?
-Because phones have micro lens sensor which wouldn't bring you the best quality video(When compared with cheap dslr with super lens).
I mean use your phone if you don't have budget but if you are willing to spend some cash when looking from DSLR or camcorder take the DSLR with super professional lens(Will also help you with photo content which you can use as thumbs or in certain points of the video)*

*Unless if you want to make livestreams and get the equipment like switches etc etc...

I use a stills camera because I've been a photographer for 10+ years.

As you might see in my introduction thread, I started out my channel by using a camera that actually was never designed to shoot video and by hacking it with MagicLantern I was then able to shoot 1080p video with it!!

Being a photographer and all I strive for high quality and I wasn't about to use a cellphone camera as my main video camera.

So I worked with what I had. And 2 upgrades later and I'm still using DSLRs for my video shooting!

The benefits to me are still relevant as my newest camera is higher resolution in stills and I like to update my website with new galleries from my video shoots. Using the same camera for both saves me from lugging around 2+ large DSLR cameras!
