Hi all,

From your experience when does a small YouTube channel videos get suggested on a big niche channel videos?

I saw for the last couple of days in my YouTube analytics one of my channels get a couple of views in suggested on the biggest famous YouTube channel videos in my niche. My channel is almost a year old and is a kids channel.

What is your experience and how long did it take for your videos to start being suggested with other biggest niche YouTube channels.

Thanks

You mean in the recommended bar on the side? As in they watch the biggest channel and on the sidebar your video shows up?

Pretty sure it could happen immediately if your SEO is on point. Otherwise dunno, YT algorithm mainly targets the videos that see a lot of potential in first 48hrs or so, ie a lot of views compared to your relative size.

Interesting indeed.

I would think either recommended / suggested bar on side or after other videos recommended videos. I do have SEO on all of my videos.

I digged a bit deeper in my analytics now and chose suggested videos for the last 28 days and to my amazement it has all of the major kids channels and they are in over 500 suggested videos with multiple videos. The top kids channels include lots of videos from Ryan Toys reviews, hobbykidstv, baby big mouth, toy freaks, Disney toys collectors, Toysandme, Toy explorers etc.

Before I noticed that my channel videos were only suggested on small channels, but now all of a sudden it gets suggested daily on biggest niche toy channels. So the lesson for me and all youtubers is not to give up and persevere and keep at it. Who knows it might get to a point where a snowball / turning point kicks in. Exciting times indeed. :)

It almost look like Youtube algorithmn is testing my channel videos with the big niche channels.

Here is a screenshot of an example top niche channel video that sent 3 views with average view time of 4.51 minutes.

You have some good suggested spots. You're right, the algo is testing you out with placements. Generally you should have high views from RTR, do you know what position or how long you were suggested for? It's strange you only got 3 views from RTR, they have incredible traffic and you should have got at least a few thousand in a few hours.

Our placements on suggested started at a little over 1k subs. The first was RTR for 1 day that got about 20k views.
Keep at it, keep matching seo parameters and align yourself with the desired verticals. In time you'll get more and more spots. Also keep making more of the videos that get the most suggested, highest retention and watch time, and rank good in search for tags. Generally make more of what's popular on your channel and things will start to roll.

Thank you for your insight. :)

My channel also just crossed 1000 subs a couple of weeks ago. So based on what you are saying from experience is that 1000 subs is a significant milestone to get to.

The amazing thing is that I saw 10+ Ryan's videos in my channel suggested list for the period last 28 day in YouTube analytics and also similar for the other big channels (Toy freakz, hobbykids, baby big mouth etc.). At the moment I did not get the 20k bump like you got, but at least YouTube is placing my videos with the biggest niche toy channels.

Yeah I hope the rolling kicks in with a bang lol :)

Oh yes so I saw one of my other kids educational channels also getting recommended / suggested on the biggest YouTube channels for that too. The difference with that channel is ... I only have 130 subs and 100 videos and it is also same time almost a year old. On this one the biggest niche educational sites include Chu Chu TV, LittleBabyBum, Baby Big Mouth etc.

So this is very interesting indeed. The one channel over a 1000 subs and the kids educational one 130 subs over the same period of under 1 year. So it looks like the sub theory is now out of the window. I think because it is related and I'm interlinking it to my other channels. Which causes it to gain authority slowly but surely, because of the other channels.

Here are examples of the biggest niche channels in my educational channel suggested videos for the past 28 days. :) I did not even know my videos were being suggested on the biggest YouTube niche channels until now.

I would like to highlight the difference between recommended and suggested. I think lower counts may be more affiliated with recommended. It usually shows videos from channels you've already watched and maybe if the channel has relevant video. For a smaller channel these views are coming from a smaller pool of opportunities resulting in lower number of views. I would guess the views from recommended are proportional to the size of your channel.

On the other hand, if your video has been placed in the suggested video of a big channel, you should receive a considerable sum of traffic. I've seen my videos spike for a couple of hours. And after 48 hours when the data becomes available, I would have seen that I was getting traffic from a big channel. But when I look my video is no longer there. So my video was probably only there during a few hours of the spike.

Or maybe my video is in the suggested of a large channel but ranked anywhere in the mid to bottom spots. That's a scenario where I'll receive a lower view count but I am usually able to look up the video and see my video in the suggested middle to bottom section. But usually the incoming views are still a considerable amount.

Recommended videos YT is placing a video to a very specific user who probably watched one of your videos already. Probably an existing subscriber of yours. In this case YT is not really associating your videos with other channels, more like associating videos to the specific viewer.

Suggested videos YT is placing video in front of potentially millions of users who are watching the main source video. This is a very desirable spot to be in and not the same as being a recommended video. You could receive hundreds to thousands of views in one day if it's from a new video from a large channel.

I haven't figured out how the suggested works. There seems to be a randomness to it. I've seen smaller channels get suggested on bigger channels. I think has less to do with channel size and more to do with channel association and having a relevant video that is competing well against other related videos. Sometimes you can compete very well if there is very little competition (hint). I haven't been able to replicate it on demand. But I have had some level of success where maybe 1 out of 5 videos might make it to a desirable suggested of bigger channel.

I'm able to get on suggested of some desirable channels for Dinotrux and thomas train. But am having no luck with moana. And ive made a bunch of moana videos. But I plan to make more moana, one of them I hope will eventually latch onto a bigger video. I was able to get into suggested when I had less than 1,000 subscribers and ive seen other channels do the same. You can do it too.

Oh I see, interesting indeed.

But still if the video(s) is recommended then it is a step in the right direction. So like you said that suggested videos is where you want your videos to be.

Hmm, who knows 1 of my videos might have been bottom spots hence the low views. Alternatively recommended based on the similarities between my videos and say a large niche channel.

So the ultimate goal is to get videos in suggested videos on big YouTube channels. So it looks like SEO plays a huge part in this.

Thanks for your sharing your experience and input.

That's an interesting question and I'm glad I came in here to read people's responses. I also agree that it mostly depends on how well you match up your tags and everything!

Work on your SEO and it'll get up there. Tags, title, description. Also add your channel into your tags. This helps rank your channel higher.
