Whats the best way to make channel art?

Hi my name is James and i am finding reeling difficult to come up with a good idea for some channel art for my channel. Also i would like to know what sort of software to use for making the channel art and what sort of pictures and designs to include in it that soot my channel best.

Please Help!​
 
you can really use anything you are comfortable with. I would recommend using a template so its the right size and quality. Here I made this template so just work in the middle part of it (transparent part) and when you upload it nothing will get cut off. Gimp is a good program, you can even get a photoshop trial. adf(dot)ly/VIdCn

thank you guys for suggesting me to use gimp. I am going to download it now and see how comfortable i feel using the software. Once again thanks for all of the help.
 
using GIMP is a great startout software, I'd also suggest watching tons of tutorial and stuff just to get familiar with the program because it can be tricky if you've never used it before.

As far as pictures, looks like your channel is more gaming and stuff, so anything relevant to what you're playing would be good!
