If you struggling to improvise, write a list of things on a piece of paper. Start recording, introduce the game (what is it/why you chose it) then start playing. As your playing talk about what your seeing/feeling and every so often add in something from your list. Then follow that up with more talking about the game and then another list item...and so on.

This is what I do anyway :D

that sounds like a awesome idea
going to try it!

I've always done improve on everything but when I used to be an activity instructor we where made to write up session plans for every activity. The same can be done in this situation. Just write up a basic session plan starting off with and introduction.

I have just posted something similar looking for ideas on what to talk about in my commentary, I recently recorded a Crysis 3 walk through and on watching it back I realized that i need to have a topic to talk about. Writing stuff down on a pad has really helped!

You need to practice. Here's my recommendation.

Load up a game and get ready to record. The videos from this are not going up on YouTube though. Start playing. Remember you have no pressure for it to be good because it's not being uploaded later.

Practice saying what you're thinking. This is a tough skill to master, but will be beneficial later. You'll find that most people don't just turn their brains off when they play. If you read a bad line of dialog, comment on how bad it was. If you die, talk about what you did wrong. Just make sure to verbalize every thought that comes into your head while playing the game.

The reason you're recording it is so you can review it later. For some reason also, when a mic is recording and people know about it, they clam up. So this is to help get over that.
