What size for avatars?

Hi everyone! I have a quick question. I've been using 500x500 pixels for my Youtube avatar for a while now but I heard that 200x200 pixels is the better size to use... Is this true? What size should I really be using for making Youtube avatars?

I always make them massive like 2000x2000, Its always better to scale down, not up.

800x800px. YouTube doesn't lie in their suggested size; they really do want them to be the best quality for you! Also, save in .PNG format to help quality issues.

I tend to make them fairly like, around 1500x1500 pixels and scale them down, that way I can have them whatever size and not lose quality!
