What is the CPM?

That means you can make 22.18 for every 1000 views you get. That's a pretty nice number, but usually it is far lower than that. You will see those higher numbers towards the weekend and especially when there is a holiday coming up!

I'v been also wondering what CPM was as well as the determining factor for how much CPM you get per 1,000.
Clicks per Mil (CPM) is just how much you make for every "monetized" view. That means only the views with ads in them, so if some one runs ad blocker, or is using a mobile device that can't track monetized views, those will not count.

To see your own stats, simply go to your video manager. Click analytics on the left side, then choose your date range which can be found in the top right of the page (default is set to last 28 days). Next, in the menu that drops down under the analytics, click the Ad performance. That menu will have 3 numbers shown. Left to right:

  1. CPM which is the dollar amount per 1,000 monetized views.
  2. Gross Revenue which is your total ad sales your videos got, and that total is before YouTube takes 40% and before your network takes "x%" if you have a network.
  3. Monetized views total for the time period chosen, but not to be confused with total views.
  • Monetized views total divided by 1,000 then multiplied by your CPM $ amount equals your total ad sales
  • CPM * (Total Views / 1000 ) = Gross Revenue
  • Gross Revenue * 60% = Total Ad Earnings (Found in Estimated Earnings just above Ad performance)
  • Ad Earnings * x % = Cash in your pocket
If your channel is anything like mine, only 33% of total views are paid (monetized) views. For the 2 years of YouTube with 9500k views, I have 3000k monetized views. This huge difference in monetized views vs total views is trending further in the wrong direction with a correlation between mobile and tablet views that has peaked recently for me at 78% in my last 30 days meaning only 22% of my total views earn money.

For the first time I chose the option to choose the option, "Make this video available only on monetized platforms" for a gauge on total view and video interaction loss vs monetization increase. I am not fan of doing that, and have waited for over 300 videos since seeing this trend year before last. However, with the low CPM's in January, and the plummeting monetized views per total views, I gave in to test it out.

On a side note, if you're curious about more of the analytics side, or well anything YouTube related, feel free to join a Teamspeak 3 server I run that is a mix of gamers and YouTubers collaborating of all ages, sizes and interest. It's a free voice chat and text chat program for the PC (paid on mobile but is cross platform), and needs to be downloaded. Once downloaded, connect to this server address:
sandseven7.teamspeak3.com then leave the password blank.

Also I'm in the middle of making a video going over a lot of this to put out actual dollar amount statistics to give a real life example since it was a search topic I could not find beyond general, vague answers. If there are any request for YouTube related strategy videos, throw out a good topic that will help educate other YouTubers, and I'll add it a series I am expanding upon. For now, it is older videos that will be made public instead of unlisted. They were created as video guides to answer questions for things such as how to edit or make a simple intro for a few that did paid promotions, which I am not doing any more, or at least not for a while. The money is great, but the selling and advertising of what I don't truly believe in got to me after spending a few months with each video opening with a paid promotion. Rather be poor than sell out completely since I already have to do enough of that balancing the desires of the audience, seen in the analytics and comments, and making what I really want to make.

Okay enough rambling as usual, but hope this helps.

Do I only get that dollar amount once my ads are shown for 1,000 times? I'm still a bit confused how this works lol

No you don't get the dollar amount only if the ads are shown. You get the amount if some of these ads were clicked on and YouTube algorithm decided that these were valid clicks. The CPM basically tells approximately how much money you will make out of 1000 monetized views on YouTube. For example you may have 20$ CPM but if you have only 100 monetized views you will end up with approximately 2$ revenue for the day. If you have 2000 monetized views for the same day most probably you will make 40$ for revenue.
