What happens when you ban someone from your channel?

Whenever someone leaves a hate comment I just ban them from my channel. I am wondering what actually happens to that user. Does it notify them that they are banned? Do their comments just not show up anymore? Can they still subscribe and like my videos? Just wondering if anyone knew.

From YouTube's help section:

• Ban from channel blocks the user from posting comments on videos and your channel. You can remove the user from the banned list later (see below).
