What do you need from an artist to legally use his work in your monetized video?

I want to ask a (small) music artist to permit me using 15 seconds of his song in a Youtube video that will be monetized by me. I want his permission for free (giving credits to him).

What exact kind of paper do I need to request from him? Or can he give his permission via email or something?

As long as you include some kind of documentation that says you acquired permission from the artist. You should be fine. I've seen this come in the form of a tweet, to something more elaborate as an email. Contact the artist (if you can.) and see what they say about it. If they give you permission, make sure you document it and keep it safe for future use (if necessary.)

I would also make sure to give credit in the description, along with links to the artists website/soundcloud/etc.

P.S. Make sure you adhere to any stipulations the artist gives you. If they request the song be unchanged and unedited when uploaded, make sure you keep it that way. Same goes for anything they may ask like, "Can you put a link to ____ in the description?".

Usually a signed statement that it's OK to use. But, I bet an e-mail would work too. It just won't be legally binding if the doodoo where to hit the fan. That's where that paper signed statement comes in.

Just want to say, even if you have a permission, it doesn't mean that you can't get a strike from those content idiots, or worse. It just helps you with a dispute. Which can take a while and still cause you trouble if your video / channel is restricted or something...

I heard of a case where a guy had problems for using the music that he wrote himself!!! :banghead:
