Western Digital Drives - DO NOT use with OSX Mavericks!

IftiBashir

Undiscovered....
Just a FYI really, but if you have a WD drive and use the WD software that comes with it (does anyone use the WD software in the first place??! lol), take the below into account before using it with OSX Mavericks.....

Dear WD Registered Customer,

As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer.

The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years, however solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue. .

Sincerely,
Western Digital

I only have one WD My Passport drive now, all my others are ThunderBolt drives, and I don't use any WD software anyway, but just thought this may come in handy for anyone else who uses the WD Raid Manager and a WD Raid enabled drive for their editing.....

I didn't even know they have software for Mac OS :') I've got a WD 1TB and it's working fine, but it wasn't actually plugged in when I updated :)

The drives will still work fine - no problems with them.
Its the WD backup software etc that used to come on their drives. The biggest issue is if you have a WD My Book Studio Raid drive (the ones with 2 physical drives inside) which are Raided in 0 or 1 for better performance or redundancy. The WD Drive Manager software you would use to either set up the Raid array, or to check the status of the disk etc, will either not work or could cause you to lose data.

WD are currently working on a fix and will probably release a new version of the tool shortly. In the meantime you can continue to use the drive etc, just avoid the software.

Is there ANYTHING that works with Mavericks? People are having problems with microphones, After Effects doesn't work, now WD software... Gee, they're really trying to justify the price tag here...

Ive updated on my MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and my Mac Mini Server - all without any issues whatsoever. Everything I ran before, runs now, perfectly fine.
Personally I like it - my battery lasts much longer, everything is slick and streamlined. All 3rd party developers had over 6 months to test and optimise their software. It needs to be tweaked to run on Mavericks - not vice versa.
Considering the entire OS is completely free in the first instance, I think its great.

Others weren't that lucky. Lamarr Wilson had to do the TWiYT Podcast with a gaming headset and MysteryGuitarMan complained about AfterEffects not working til their next update. (Well, more informed than complained.

Is the OS really free, though? Or is it just the update that's free? Can you get the OS somewhere else than from the app store and from a machine that's not already running OS X?

Yes its completely free to upgrade to it.
You can create a bootable USB drive of it pretty easily - I'll be creating a tutorial guide on how to do this shortly - but its only available through the Mac App Store.
