Voice changing technique/software?

Does anyone know a good software to do a voice change? I have tried Audacity's pitch change, but my friend said he can tell that it sounds fake (not sure if I just didn't do a good job or what).

I want to do a voice over for a character but I feel like my original voice doesn't match the character @_@ I know some people can do a voice acting without any software aid, but I don't know how to do that (T_T)

Any tip/advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
 
you have to make your voice sound completely freakish before you find out how to change the pitch right away
