Video unfriendly to advertising

Just had the strangest thing happen to my most recent video.

It's a video about an old metal lathe, much the same as all my other metal work videos.

Anyway, all seemed OK after uploading, and when I reviewed it a day later I noticed the video had been flagged as unfriendly to advertising - it's currently under review again, after I asked it be re-examined.

I have no idea what brought this on.

It's called "Classic early lathe found in salvage yard".

I expect it's a glitch in the process, but it's annoying that I've just lost advertising on over 1,000 views as a result.

See what happens.

Cheers Rob

Good luck my friend; I've been a subscriber for a couple of years now. As a DIYer in a different genre I find your videos of interest. That algorithm needs de-sensitizing.

Still under review. LOL.

One of my fastest viewing videos ever and they do this to me.

No explanation.

The big joke is that only yesterday before this happened, they asked me to do a survey on how good YT was and how well they communicated with and looked after users.

Like an idiot I said it was all wonderful.

Not happy with the way this is going.

Man!

I'm looking at all the comments; and the funny thing is, hubby and I took a week long break in the City of York itself last month. Your respondents are right my friend; DSG is still considered amongst the highest rated of metalworking tool lines. If you had the restoration time and energy, I'd consider picking it up, restoring it and selling it on if you yourself couldn't use it.

A piece like that, properly restored (as I know you could do from watching your videos over the years), could land you a hefty sum in profit if auctioned at a specialty house.

Yeah, it's clearly an anomaly of the over-zealous algorithm.

The algorithm is enforcing these guidelines: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6162278?hl=en

I've just had a look at the metadata of the video and the only thing I can think of is the algorithm has picked up the following sentence in the description:

"I have no involvement with, or endorsement by, this salvage yard whatsoever."

Obviously your video is fine, but algorithms are stupid and are unable to understand context of keywords and their real semantics.

So I'm guessing that the algorithm now thinks that the video has a product placement in it and so it has been flagged. You might want to remove that sentence and say it in a different way (without the word "endorsement") or just leave it out completely; Having said that, now that it has been flagged, the algorithm might not "release" it until it has been manually reviewed by a member of YT staff, but it might be worth a try.

I put the statement "I have no involvement with, or endorsement by, this salvage yard whatsoever." in the description AFTER the video was classified as advertiser unfriendly.

My reasoning was that in the final closing screen where I have text describing the lathe condition etc, I mention the lathe is for sale.

I had a feeling the algorithm may have picked on the "for sale" bit, and thought I had an endorsement from the yard.

That's the only thing I could think of - all the rest looked quite OK.

Anyway, I can report that two thousand non monetized views later, they have removed the restriction and the ad is now monetized again.

Well it's something to watch out for in future I guess. I rarely have text screens in my videos, never had a problem before, so I'm betting this was the problem.

I hope this helps someone else.

Cheers Rob
