The video on which i am editing lags when i'm trying to edit it within the software (camtasia) after the video is published it runs smoothly as you can see on my YouTube channel (latest video). However i asked a few friends and they suggested it's because i have a slow computer and therefore the editing software lags. I was wondering if anybody has come across the same problem and new how to solve it other than getting a new computer and spending lots of money. Hope you guys can help because it is limiting me and becoming frustrating when it comes to editing, Hope you can help? thankyou

Yes this is completely normal for "not extremely fast" PCs! the reason why it is lagging is because if you record a video its quite a big file so it lags on your PC. After editing the file gets pretty small (because he doesnt record your entire video, only the screenshot changes! you dont see the diffrences but believe me, your PC does) and he removes the lag so it plays smoothly :D

So dont worry!

What format do you have the video in camtasia? When I used camtasia, .mov files lagged but when I converted the files to .mp4 then went to editing it was smoother.

Its your PC , RAM to be specific...it is just the way it is until you get a new PC im afraid...even still , I built quite a good PC at christmas and it may lag from time to time!

@cmcollection I am using mp4 as i tryed to use i think it was 'avchd' however this wouldn't work so my friend suggested i rendered it into a mp4 using WMM. Thanks[DOUBLEPOST=1389567124,1389566996][/DOUBLEPOST]@Rouge anyone would think they should make better editing software for computers with poor RAM other than wmm because that always seems to corrupts some of my video cuts, haha i can never get anything perfect!

yeah, but The thing is, editing softwares need to run that way, its kinda like saying I would love a cup of coffee but somebody only putting one grain in, it just wouldnt work :p

Thought I was the only one! Basically, I need a better PC, but I cope with it as I don't do masses of editing. If I do need to do big editing, I turn my PC off/on again and only open the video editor.

It can be much more than ram, video editing is quite extensive and needs speed from multiple places to run perfectly.

You do in fact need to buff up your computer if you don't want lag. Ram is in fact a good solution but if you can afford it a full upgrade would not hurt.

With video editing you should want a minimum of 8 gigs for easy editing. Anything less you will start to notice things getting bogged down. If you decide to incorporate AE and Premiere into your workflow at once then 16 gigs should be your minimum.

Easy solutions for now you can change your format to a more smooth format that doesn't require as much. You can change your playback resolution. "Premire, FC and many others have this option yours might too". You can change this so your viewing resolution is less and can preview things better. For example when I get about a ton of different layers of materials going from all different programs, "ae, premiere, photoshop sometimes my computer will begin to lag. So I can change the resolution to 1/2 or even a 1/4th and it'll play it fine. Check and see if you have this.

@PressRecord thanks so much! but where do i check? i am not that good with computers! aha
Click start, right click my computer, click properties and you will be able to see all your system specs there. =)

While your there another fun test would be to see your system rating. Click on that and see what is handicapping your computer. It could be ram but it could also be a bad harddrive that is too slow to read the information it's putting out. You'll be able to see there what is weak and needs upgraded.
