Video Camera Suggestions?

Hi friends, I've only ever posted videos recorded with an iPhone or MacBook Pro, so I'd definitely like to upgrade (and quick!). I was just wondering if anybody had suggestions for some sort of camera that I could use for both recording and high quality photography. Under $400 would be great if possible! Thank you all!

:wavespin:

In my opinion you should purchase a DSLR camera. If you're willing to save up a bit more money then you could get a Canon EOS 550d (aka T2i Rebel), that's a really good camera for its price. Feel free to check out some sample videos on YouTube. ;) Originally I wanted to buy an 550d too but with a little financial support I'm getting a 700d this week, I'm super excited about it. :D

This might be a really stupid question because I don't know that much about cameras, but would it be possible to use the audio recorded by the camera for music videos or would it be way better to have a separate microphone for that?

That's not a stupid question at all. ;) Technically you could yeah, but it's not worth it in my opinion. Even those high-end DSLR cameras have only a decent audio quality so you'd be better buying a microphone in order to record your music in better quality & look more professional. ;)

I am into photography, I bought the Nikon D7000. I then realised it did video too, thats how I got into YouTube. The quality is really good and the camera is great for both photography and for video.

Problem with using DSLR for filming is you need a lot of other parts in order for it to be worth it:
- External mic as the internal one peaks like crazy and catches wind like crazy

- Tripod with video head if you are doing any filming, tripod even just to it stays level as it can be pretty front heavy depending on the lens. And if it's not secure, you will cry as your DSLR drops on the floor.

- Lighting, even with HD footage, if your DSLR body is a lower one (550D for example) the sensor in low light is horrible, so you need adequate lighting or studio lighting.

- Glass/lens. The kit lens that the cameras come with aren't fantastic. They don't autofocus (if you don't have a camera man). Also they are cheapy feeling and the quality is shoddy. So you are going to probably have to invest in a fast prime lens if you want to upgrade the video quality.

That said, if you are willing to put in the investment for those things, you will truly unlock the potential of filming with DSLRs. Same goes with using it for photos, then the price goes up more haha.

I use a Canon EOS 650D (Rebel T4i in the USA) coupled with an Audio Technica ATR-3350 lapel mic - comes out pretty good for me!

Im actually considering selling the 650D now and upgrading......... ;)
