Using Music In Your Videos - Good or Bad?

I had someone tell me recently that using royalty free music in your videos can harm your rankings -

Here's what he said:

Sites like Animoto for example have been around for several years and 1,000's of marketers alone have created countless low quality videos, some people spam these types of video all over youtube and the web and the one thing that links them all together is the royalty free music.

Is there any truth to this?

Well using royalty free music that you have permission to use is better than using music you don't have permission to use and get a copyright strick. So I think it's a good idea.

Agreed you sure don't want to get involved with copyright infringement.

All the music I use is royalty free and I have paid for it - I get most if not all my music and other stuff from Pond5

I used royalty free music and YouTube finds a way to copyright them by adding matched 3rd party content to them. Now I avoid music on videos altogether. :|

I just started using royalty free music on my last video. I thought if you gave credit it wouldn't be a copyright issue?

Whether if YouTube content matches it and lowers the ranking of your video, I haven't heard of that before.

Did not know this - see I learned something new and I have been a members for less than a hour - cool beans

My videos either have low back ground music to fill out the video while I'm talking or nothing at all.

However I do a have a few videos that have PowerPoint style presentations with the music as the feature.

Yeah that's what I think to - but I really don't know if it is a factor in determining ranking.
I think his concern sounds silly. Hell of alot better than either A) not using music or B) using music you could get a strike for using.

True - I'm really not going to agonize over it - I just found the statement odd and was wondering what others thought- this is video - music can create the mood and the feeling we want or need much better than words can.

I think if we over think things to much we loose creativity.
