I get a lot of troll comments on a daily basis. I am called names, cussed at, and receive "that's 3 minutes I will never get back..." comments by the droves.
Does it bother me? Not really. One thing I have learned is Youtube is like a petri dish to study human psychology in. Most unflattering comments are driven by insecure people. They might be jealous, prejudiced, or just have an inferiority complex that is overcompensated with a superiority complex.
They may just be 10 years old and think they are being funny.
Ok, I just play a psychologist on Youtube.... Just remember, no matter what people say, the issue is with the commenter, NOT YOU. Comments just reveal characteristic flaws with people. Their own comments are a reflection of them, not you.
If negative comments really bother you, just delete them and don't dwell on them. Block them, they lost the right to comment on your videos. End of story.
A good strategy to discourage negative comments is to ONLY reply to friendly comments. If trolls see that you reply to troll comments, it emboldens more trolls. If good commenters see you only reply to nice comments, it empowers nice people to comment more.
But... I can't help myself and I enjoy trolling the trolls. Sometimes I will just see how many times I can get them to reply again. Then I will tell them that I won a bet with my buddy who said I couldn't get them to reply 5 times. Comments are very good for viewer-engagement stats. I sometimes will just "work" a troll to get them to comment a lot more.
Sometimes you can snap a troll back to reality by simply saying, "Come on man, you are better than that" or "That is a pretty mean thing to say." or "Did you really want to say that?" Surprisingly, I've shocked many trolls with those comebacks.
I NEVER sink to the same level as the trolls. When you stay classy, other viewers will support you and will often chastise the troll. Sometimes they will attack like a pack of wolves. I don't want to directly insult the troll and escalate the situation.
You've probably noticed that most trolls do NOT post their own videos. These are the boldest, rudest people I encounter. They have no empathy since they have never been judged by other people watching their videos. I will tell them, "Hey bro, it's 2014, why don't you post a video so we can all judge YOU?"
I have found that "Thanks for watching!" is always a great comeback. (everyone knows what I really wanted to say- but appreciate my restraint)
One of my classic replies to comments like, "the music is gay" is "Hey! Glad you liked it!"
Just realize that EVERYONE gets troll comments. Don't let a few jerks stop you from doing what you are doing. Don't let them bother you.
