Can someone please tell me the best way to make a good looking video thumbnail, or what utilities you need to make one? I do not want it super complex, but something simple I.E. my YouTube username, and a little subtitle that says what I am doing(LP's or completes) and the name of the game I am playing.

well i use photoshop and glimp it is very simple you already have the idea right you just need background pic of an element of the game you are playing then the part of the lets play and your name on it.

Go with something simple, not overwhelming. Make sure the name of the game is noticeable, and doesn't blend in with the background. Have the name of the episode noticeable as well, and maybe add a picture or two of something that represents the episode name.

What I do for a series, is use the same format for all the episodes. The same background, and position of the game title. Same font, color, and position of the text, and then I add a picture or two to represent the episode. If you want, go check out my gaming channel (KGATVGaming) and take a look. I only have 2 episodes uploaded right now, but i'm doing the whole season that way.

if you don't have the expensive softwares at your disposal try using something like power point. Bet you didn't see that coming.
but you can add an image, and text to it and then export it as a jpeg and upload it to youtube
plus unlike paint you can shift the text after and not have to worry about not being able to re use something.
you can even create your own templates if you want
